The definitive historical account of Johnson, Clark & Co. is on the Sewalot site.

For information on the Household Sewing Machine and Penfield & West, advance to page 67 of the Earl J. Arnold Advertising Card Collection.

Sewing machine expert Alex Askaroff posts an excellent narrative on the New Remington Sewing Machine. Remington is well known as a firearms manufacturer. At one time it supplemented its income by manufacturing sewing machines, as well. Providence Tool Co., maker of the Household brand sewing machine, did this as well.

Wikipedia features this public domain photo of the Remington factory before the Civil War:

Google Maps/ Street View shows the Remington plant in Ilion NY, Sept 2008:

This plant has manufactured everything from typewriters to sewing machines to armament,
a very resilient facility, making the popular product of the day.
I doubt the building pictured in Wikipedia survived the various expansions over the years.

The Davis Sewing Machine Company originated in Watertown, NY, then moved to Dayton, OH.
The best history of the company I could find was on the International Sewing Machine Collector's Society site.
