The International Sewing Machine Collectors' Society is the place to go for a history of the White Sewing Machine Company. It was based in Cleveland, OH and according to the Society, made "machines capable of sewing thick materials that many modern machines are incapable of handling."
Wikipedia also has a brief summary of White history that may be of interest:
"The White Sewing Machine Company was a sewing machine company founded in 1858 in Templeton, Massachusetts by Thomas H. White and based in Cleveland, Ohio since 1866. Founded as the White Manufacturing Company it took the White Sewing Machine Company name when it was incorporated in 1876."
