While a Google search found nothing on "Virginius Cigars," Myers, Tice and Co. information does surface on Google Books:

Encyclopedia Dubuque has more information on this firm.

That would be "S.I. Freeman's," Hartford CT.

No wonder this whale was gritting its "teeth."
Whale oil was one of the ingredients used by Kendall Mfg. Co. in fabricating its products.
See page 147 of the Earl J. Arnold Advertising Card Collection for a discussion of Soapine and the Kendall Manufacturing Company.

According to Wikipedia, "John Henry Bufford (1810-1870) was a lithographer in 19th-century BostonMassachusetts." Also according to Wikipedia, he was only a "mediocre" artist at best, but had good management skills.

Flower City Soap Co., 128 Front St., Rochester, NY
From Digital Commonwealth, the back of a White Swan trade card:

The Rochester Directory, via Google Books, pinpoints the location of the factory:

In the 19th century, there was nothing complimentary about the Chinese stereotype.

More on Lavine soap and the Hartford Chemical Company that made it is on the next post, page 57 of the Earl J. Arnold Advertising Card Collection.
